FULL-DAY LIMA FOOD AND SOCIO-CULTURAL TOUR
AM: Discover the wide world of Peruvian food... Your full day Lima tour begins with a comprehensive gastronomic experience to confirm all the hype you've heard, labeling Peru as the foodie mecca of South America. Indeed, there are few places so exciting in the culinary world right now as Peru, and Lima the capital is where coast, mountain, and rainforest influences all come together.
Starting from the Miraflores district, we start our Lima food tour orientation walk towards the market where your 100% bilingual guide will give you some brief background on Lima, its history, its cultures, and how it all manifests in Peruvian dishes.
Arriving at the market, you will meet our friendly vendors who are eager to show off the vast array of ingredients common in the local gastronomy, whether it comes from the Pacific Coast, the Andes, or the Amazon.
Try curious delights such as in-season coastal fruits, Limeños' childhood favorite snacks, a surprise jungle concoction, and perhaps a freshly made ceviche!
Save some room for lunch though! We will head to a typical Peruvian restaurant deep in this district far from any touristy vibes and try beloved seafood and/or creole dishes perfected over the decades by the local cooks.
These neighborhoods are the poorest areas of the city, but at the same time they are rich in diversity and have some of the most hardworking and friendliest people you will ever meet. We focus on their optimism, hope, and efforts for a better life for their children while learning more about their daily lives and positive initiatives that are changing lives.
On the tour, you will visit one of the non-profit organizations that are working hard to improve lives in these neighborhoods.
Learn about and participate in a grassroots project and get to know some of the locals. One of these projects, for instance, is a special after-school program that empowers young kids and teaches them entrepreneurial skills. They learn how to make a certain product, such as recycled handicrafts or pastries, and then market and sell them in their community and beyond.
These kids will show and explain to you how they make their products and they might even let you help them! They are eager to know more about you and where you came from so be ready to answer a few questions.
Lima te Llena translates as "Lima fills you." The capital of Peru is a metropolis with countless dimensions to discover, and just experiencing its surface layers doesn't do Lima justice. Our in-depth and expertly led local food tours and art and culture workshops showcase the real and authentic versions of the city that most visitors aren't aware exist.
Alternative Peru offers alternative and responsible travel options. We focus on authentic intercultural experiences that bring travelers to places beyond the traditional sights. We emphasize culturally sensitive, respectful encounters between tourists and hosts and show a beautiful, different side of Peru that often is overlooked by the majority of tourists. Most importantly, your visit benefits the communities on your trip since part of the proceeds go to the project you visited.
