Full-Day Lima Food and Socio-Cultural Tour
[about 7 Hours]
Why take this tour?
Start time: 10:30am
Duration: approximately 7 hours (end time 5:00-5:30pm)
Lima te Llena's exclusive combination tour and partnership with Alternative Peru takes you to experience Peruvian gastronomy and see local life from completely new perspectives.
AM: Discover the wide world of Peruvian food:
See our signature Peruvian Food & Market Tour!
PM: See a side of Limeño life far from the touristic districts:
After lunch, you will be picked up by vehicle to go to a part of Lima that seems very far away from the Lima that tourists know: Lima’s pueblos jovenes, or human settlements, are where colorful houses of rustic materials are built on the hillsides.
Your first stop will be the second largest cemetery in the world. It is incredibly unique and very impressive, and you will learn more about deeply rooted details of Andean culture (especially with relation to death and burial).
Continue to the outer neighborhoods set on mountainside and which are the poorest areas of the city, but at the same time they are rich in diversity and have some of the most hardworking and friendliest people you will ever meet. We focus on their optimism, hope, and efforts for a better life for their children while learning more about their daily customs and positive initiatives that are changing lives. On the tour, you will also visit an organization who aims to inspire and make positive changes.
For example, in one neighborhood, a local guide will show you around her neighborhood located on the slopes of the sandy hills of Lima’s outskirts and some of the innovative social and environmental projects that have been set up by a local NGO. Another project takes you to learn about a project which focuses on the rights and empowerment of domestic workers. Yet another strives for environmental awareness for kids and teenagers, and one more organizes special after-school programs that empower young children by teaching them entrepreneurial skills.
The exact social project and grassroots NGO will depend on the day, so as not to interrupt any of their existing community activities. Your visit will benefit the communities and the specific project you participate in, both in spirit and financially, to ensure that the people are able to continue their efforts to fight socio-economic inequality in Lima. The aim of this half of your day is a genuine intercultural experience.
At the end of the day, we will take you back to your hotel.
Authentic Peruvian gastronomy, which is our passion and focus, may not always be vegetarian or vegan friendly. Unfortunately this year 2016, it has been difficult for us to find vendors that offer vegetarian meals and options in our local market, especially in comparison to last year, and ones that are representative of the food history in Peru. Essentially, we cannot guarantee the local availability of certain veggie dishes that we'd love to show you.
Should you still be interested in soaking in the Lima's vibrant gastronomic environment with us, we will try our best to substitute as many meat-based ingredients as possible. Exact availability will depend on daily local availability and conditions.
